Seeds of Shame?

Gardening Into The Future.
Gardening is enjoying renewed interest in the US and around the world. We are trudging down the garden path of our grandparents to plant our own Victory Gardens. We dig in the dirt and drop in a few seeds and a miracle happens...food appears! Home gardening seems so safe, we know what we put on our food and we can choose organic or non-organic methods, but the line is beginning to blur. Can Genetically Modified(GM) crops be "Organic"? How do we know if seeds are GM or not? Where do garden seeds come from? Who grows fruits and vegetables just for the seeds? Monsanto is the worlds largest supplier of garden seed in the world, so how do we trust that they are selling us the seeds we want? Currently there is no way to know.

Monsanto is the largest supplier of seeds in the world, but they don't seem very proud of the fact. I doubt I will ever see a package of Monsanto Brand Big Beef Tomatoes but they own that variety. Big Beef Tomato Seeds are resold by dozens of seed companies including Johnny's and Burpee, but nowhere do they say "Proudly Produced by Monsanto Seeds..." In fact 23% of the Tomato seeds sold in the WORLD come from Monsanto and none of them say so on the package. Monsanto is also the creator of "Round-up Ready" seeds and "Terminator" Seeds. When will these dubious "atributes" be incorporated into vegetable garden seeds? Very Very soon.

Monsanto subsidiary Seminis is announcing "Seedless Tomatoes" on it's website. Tomatoes WITHOUT SEEDS. "Seedless" is the basic foundation of "Terminator" seeds...they don't reproduce. I felt a chill down my spine at the thought of that. When bees visit the flowers of these tomatoes, they will cross pollinate with other tomatoes....how long does it take to make ALL tomatoes SEEDLESS? The only seeds available will be from Monsanto!

Seeds are the foundation of the future of our food supply, yet it is almost impossible to find out where the seeds come from. Even Heirloom varieties can be contaminated, and if they are, all the better for Monsanto. It is time to care for our own future by being more careful where we get our seeds. Boycott the GM seeds and be watchful for your neighbors to prevent cross-contamination. And, learn how to collect your own seeds for the coming season.

Monsanto & Dow in my opinion have been noticeable working together since the Vietnam War. Their production of Agents Orange, White and the rest of the rainbow chemicals showed the world beyond any doubt that these two companies didn’t mind their own customers dying, as long as they make sales. Vietnamese, US, Canadian, Australian, British and New Zealand soldiers as well as civilians of many of these countries were among the victims of these two companies’ mistakes. The Amount of money spent lobbying governments, campaign donations and greasing of the palms in business is staggering and exceeds the money spent on their chemical victims hundreds of times over.

Monsanto and Dow after seeing how many medical conditions caused by their chemicals got into pharmaceuticals. Let’s face it if the people weren’t going to out right die from the chemicals, then they wanted to make the money being spent on keeping them alive or as some would say, “Keep them shitting”.

Wile they were at it food was needed to eat if they wanted them pooping so both began the slow and long take over of seed companies and modification of the seeds in order to out right own life.

Today Dow and Monsanto are in the process of obtaining the rights or outright ownership of our water supply and our food through the seeds they genetically modify, that we plant. It is beyond belief that any government can not see the steady march towards world domination through our food and water supplies. I personally fear the time when these proven uncaring corporations own the world food supply, in fact I already fear for the world because of what they already own or control. But most of all I worry about how many high ranking government officials are owing to these two companies.

Thanks for the comment Kenneth Young.

I have been watching these companies since the Vietnam era and I have seen nothing good at all.

The convoluted ownerships of companies is so extensive that it is hard to even know who-owns-what.

Greed is the driving force and our Government won't follow up in reining in these giants of destruction. I honestly cannot see a future that is better than what we have right now. Even the most remote place of Earth is going to be mowed down and used for a dumping grounds.

What is wrong with GM foods?

My number one question concerning GM foods is this, "If GM foods are better and safe, then why doesn't the company that creates it advertise those facts and label their food, proudly, as GM instead of hiding behind out-of-date labeling laws???"

If Monsanto or Dow has really created a "cancer curing broccoli" or a "high protein corn", why do they hide them in with all the other, cheaper produce on the market? Why don't we see "Super Veggies By Monsanto" on our supermarket shelves? Why are the GM companies hiding their involvement in subsidiaries instead of being proud of their products???

Monsanto now produces about 40% of the food seeds on the planet but have you ever seen a package that says, "Burpless Cucumbers GM107 By MONSANTO" Nope, they sell their seeds under hundreds of names with no origin listed.

If Monsanto and Dow do not want to be associated with the GM products they create, then -in my opinion- there is something seriously wrong with the products.

Great article. This subject has been on my mind a lot, lately.

I can just see them waiting until everyone has a Victory Garden and having us all arrested for copyright infringement.

The most sickening part is the idea that the cross-contamination will affect those of us who are genuinely trying to preserve heirloom varieties, not to mention the integrity of the varieties, themselves.

I belong to a local seed swap group, and would like to share your article with them. If there is any way to fight these conglomerates, it will be through local "seed activism".

Although I agree with much of what you are saying, it should be noted that seedless fruits and vegetables are usually hybrids, which don't breed true. So the chances of their genes going out in the world and cross-pollinating all plants of a given type into seedlessness is pretty unlikely. Unless these new tomatoes are specifically GM, they're probably perfectly fine.

That said, I try to avoid supporting Monsanto in any way, shape, or form, so I wouldn't buy the seeds in the first place. I'm just saying that a seedless variety is not necessarily something to panic about.

Also, thanks for the list of companies! Fortunately, I avoid most of them in the first place, but it will be very helpful to check so I can avoid more of them in the future.
